Has Your Loved One Been Injured In A Car Accident? What You Should Do Once You Are Notified

Posted on: 23 November 2017

Following a car accident, there are certain things that people should do to help obtain evidence for a potential personal injury claim. But if they have been injured, they are unable to do this as they need to seek medical treatment. Fortunately, family members can do a few things that can help you with a future claim. If your loved one has been injured in a car accident, here are a few of the steps you should take while your loved one is getting the medical treatment they need:

Take Pictures of the Car and Accident Scene

If your loved one has been hospitalized following a car accident, always try to take pictures of the car and the accident scene as quickly as possible. This is important even if the car has since been moved or towed. There are many reasons a car accident may occur. Lighting may have been bad, road conditions may have been poor, or the road can be poorly designed. If an accident occurs on the road, the city may quickly change out the lighting or take action to fix potholes. Documenting the road as it was on the day of the accident is important, as is documenting any damage to the car before it is repaired.

Start Looking for Witnesses

Another thing that you can do following a car accident to help your loved one is to begin to look for any witnesses who may have witnessed the crash. Talking to homeowners or business owners in the area may help you to find people who saw the crash. If you find witnesses, write down their name, phone number, and address. If there is a discrepancy between who is at fault for the accident, witnesses can ultimately provide statements that can help to show who was at fault.

Find and Consult With an Attorney

If your loved one is injured, you can begin the process of researching attorneys and scheduling consultations on their behalf. Many personal injury attorneys will come to your loved one's hospital room or home if needed. Taking the time to find a great attorney for your loved one can take some of the burden off of them and allow them to focus on healing, rather than dealing with this type of case.

If your loved one has been injured in a car accident, they may have been unable to obtain witnesses information and take pictures of the accident scene. Fortunately, all is not lost in this situation. You can assist your loved one by taking pictures of the car and accident scene, looking for and talking to witnesses and finding a great personal injury lawyer who can further assist them and help them recover money to pay for their medical expenses and lost wages.
